#11 • It's actually a lake, Lagoa do Congro

A wonderful walk with an even more wonderful peaceful lake in the middle of Sao Miguel

[00:00:00] Joseph: Okay today, we're back on the islands in the Atlantic, the Portuguese Azores and Kelly. We were out...

[00:00:27] Kelly: Being ridiculous

[00:00:29] Joseph: ...going around this island and we were super exposed to the ocean and the cliffs. And, the wonder that is the coast. And I think we saw a sign that pulled up a Google map, jumped into the vertical Spacey satellite view and went, "Hey, there's this weird hole over there, take a right."

[00:00:49] And we came up on a weird hole, but one that was very green. What do we think we call this Lagoa

Find it Here

[00:00:58] Kelly: do Congro, it's a butchered pronunciation. It's named after the first owner and they call them O Congro and then there's actually a fish here too, that they call that as well. So there's fish here and a couple of families owned it after and they planted a lot of the vegetation. So, a lot of this stuff is not endemic to the area.

[00:01:21] You, I think you have it right. We had, we had a little bit of time to kill it right towards the end and day was, "Hey, we got a couple hours before sunset, what do we do?" We pulled this up and we, we went up to this dirt road. So what I think it is, is a really good reminder is we're on a volcanic island.

[00:01:35] You've got this essentially hole in the ground, surrounded 365, by lush lush vegetation. It's a wonderful hike down a 20 minute walk. And, it is, uh, it's it was formed 3,800 years ago by some eruption. And it is in this area called Furnas, which also is where you're gonna find, your, a few of the hot baths, a few of the, of, of those, which we'll talk about all the time.

[00:02:04] But just a wonderful, wonderful little hike, little walk. And if you take your time, lots of fish, lots of birds, and then also reptiles. You can find some reptiles in this area too - that are interesting. We were not quite as present as we should have been and a little bit too focused on trying to get a drone out of a little hole in the canopy.

[00:02:23] Uh, but you made it happen.

[00:02:24] Joseph: And it was crazy. Our day was cloudy. Yes. And I remember being just immersed in nature after having many hours of exposure to metal and injected plastic of the rental car. And that contrast again with the, with the coastal contrast was really wonderful.

[00:02:46] Kelly: It was great. And, and this is a missed one.

[00:02:49] This is easy to go there and miss, but if you've got a couple of hours extra on Sao, Miguel, and you don't want to just go and hold up somewhere, shoot up. We'll include some pins because you gotta basically park on the side of this farm road and you gotta go down this hike. You'll probably, if you're there later in the day, you'll find other people golden hour is probably when this place shines the best in the morning. So give that a whirl.

[00:03:13] Take some water cuz while it's only a 25 minute hike, it's really, really easy to go down. I remember being a little challenging going back up, but then again, we were lugging a bunch of gear as well. So, easy hike for kids. I would say too, like super simple. They're gonna be ducking under stuff and having fun.

[00:03:27] Joseph: A wide path, mostly smooth.

[00:03:30] Kelly: Oh yeah. Yeah. With switch backs, relatively simple.

[00:03:33] Joseph: Yeah. Cool.

[00:03:35] Kelly: No idea. Why it's this green, uh, "reflection for the surrounding?" I'm guessing, maybe, I don't know. It's an aquifer as well. So some stuff is happening there, but quite quite wonderful. And I think some of the photos we found online are better than we got that day, because it was so, so cloudy, but there's a few down low ones where it just, it's just stunning.

[00:03:56] Joseph: That's fantastic. And while you're out there, share it with friends, toss us, your photos of being there. And we look forward to hearing about your moments.

[00:04:06] Kelly: Yeah, I, I, absolutely. And this is one of those places, if you time it right. And you're there by yourself, it is dead quiet. It is just dead quiet. So enjoy that.

[00:04:17] Sit on a log. Dang your feet in the water. Enjoy it.

[00:04:20] Joseph: Take care out there.
